Our Music and Movement program is up and running!  We have been getting a great turnout so far.  I am so glad that we could offer a program like this to our community on a weekly basis.

This program is geared toward 3 to 5 year-olds and an adult caregiver.  In this program, I primarily use a music and early literacy building approach called Education Through Music (ETM) and I incorporate one musical instrument or movement prop activity.
The Plan...
Opening Song (ETM): Come Along and Walk with Me

Name Song (ETM):  Hi, I See You

Big Movement Song (ETM): Rig a Jig Jig

Cluster Song (ETM): High Stepping Horses

Musical Instrument Activity: Egg Shakers

"I Can Shake My Shaker Egg"

"London Bridge"
Big Movement Song (ETM): Looby Loo

Cluster Song (ETM): Mary's Wearing

Closing Song:  We Wave Goodbye Like This

We wave goodbye like this.
We wave goodbye like this.
We clap our hands for all our friends.

Today's Preschool storytime was so much fun! The kiddos really love the Magic Bag (see Preschool Storytime post or keep reading).

The theme for storytime this month is Colors.  I like to keep the same theme for the entire month because repetition is awesome for this age group, but also because we have two different preschool storytime facilitators so this creates some continuity for the kiddos that attend each week.
The Plan...
Welcome

We clap and sing hello,
We clap and sing hello,
With our friends at storytime,
We clap and sing hello!

Big Movement Song (ETM):  Clap Your Hands

Fingerplay: 5 Little Crayons

Five little crayons, waiting in a row.
The first one said, “I’m red, you know!”
The second one said, “I’m green like a tree.”
The third one said, “I’m blue like the sea.”
The fourth one said, “I’m yellow as the sun.”
The fifth one said, “Being purple is fun!”
Five little crayons, happy as can be,
Coloring pictures with you and me!

Letter of the Week: Tt
I like to introduce the Letter of the Week with a little something I call the "Magic Bag."  I made the "Magic Bag" with a sparkly holiday placemat that I purchased at Target a couple of years ago.  I fill the "Magic Bag" with various items that begin with the letter of the week.  We sing the "Magic Bag" song (that I made up on a commute to work the first day of preschool storytime) and I pull out the various items from the "Magic Bag."

Let's all look in the magic bag,
The magic bag, the magic bag.
Let's all look in the magic bag,
To find out what's inside.

Before the kiddos leave storytime, I provide them with a Letter of the Week handout that has activities that are based on ECRR II (sing, play, read, write, and talk).  Here is the handout:

High as a house. (Stretch arms out wide.)
Thin as a pin. (Hold arms next to body.)
Small as a mouse. (Huddle down in squatting position.)

Hello and Happy Fall!  I am so excited to be facilitating Preschool Storytime this fall.  I will be sharing preschool storytime facilitation duties with one of my colleagues so I will not be posting about preschool storytime every week. During the month of September, we will be focusing on the theme of "colors."
The Plan...
Welcome

Letter of the Week: S
I introduce the letter of the week by pulling items that begin with the letter of the week out of a sparkly bag that I made out of a holiday placemat from Target.  I call it the "Magic Bag" (because sparkles).  On the way to work this morning, I came up with a "Magic Bag" song.

To the tune of "Do You Know the Muffin Man?"

Let's all look in the magic bag,
the magic bag, the magic bag.
Let's all look in the magic bag,
to find out what's inside.

This week, I placed the following items inside of the magic bag: snake, scarf, square, and sunglasses.  I also have a letter of the week flannel set for each letter of the alphabet.  I like to put the letter of the week inside of the magic bag and I pull it out of the magic bag last.

I also give the kiddos a Letter of the Week handout for their caregivers that have ECRR II based activities (sing, play, read, write, and talk).  Here is the handout:

This fall we started a new weekly program called Music and Movement for 3 to 5 year-olds and their adult caregivers.

I am alternating the facilitation of this program with one of my colleagues, so I will not be posting for this program on a weekly basis.

I will be using Education Through Music in this program in addition to a musical instrument or movement prop activity (like the parachute or stretchy band).  If you are new to this blog, you may be wondering what is this "Education Through Music?"  I did a weekly blog series called Musical Monday that talks about ETM at length.  You can check out the first post here: Musical Monday I.

Welcome and guidelines

Name Song (ETM) "Hi, I See You"
I had all of the participants (adults too) put on name tags and I sang about everyone.  The goal here was to create community!
