Outcome 1D: Apply the core values and ethics of LIS to diverse local, national, and global contexts.
In the summer of 2018, I was approached by a professor in the school of education at North Central College. She loved that I used diverse literature in my storytimes and wanted to know more about how I plan for my programs. She invited me to present a workshop on diversity and social justice in children’s literature to her students. In addition to my presentation, I also curated several booklists on various topics such as women in STEAM, friendship, and self-acceptance.
This February, the professor invited me back to speak with her spring semester class. I brought several examples of board books, picture books, middle-grade chapter books, and young adult titles for her students to look through and created interactive activities to further introduce them to diverse literature. As an extension of my presentation, the professor tasked her students to submit proposals to the North Central College librarian suggesting diverse titles to add to the library’s collection for students to use in their clinical studies and student teaching experiences.
I firmly believe that it is important for librarians to foster relationships with community organizations and stakeholders. I also believe that working with pre-service teachers will help them become acquainted with the many library services and materials available to them and in turn, encourage them to establish positive working relationships with their local library.
